Day 1.
Auckland – Waitomo – Rotorua
Today, start your journey to the historic Waitomo Glowworm Caves wonderland from Auckland to travel north into the King Country region, home of the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Travel through these underground limestone caverns on a 45-minute guided tour and hear how the impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and other weird and wonderful rock formations formed over 30 million years ago.
The magical Glowworm Grotto is a highlight – travelling by boat along an underground stream while thousands of tiny glowworms illuminate the cavern above you.
Back on the road, we travel through rolling farmland and pass alongside picturesque Lake Whakamaru before arriving at Orakei Korako. In this hidden valley, steam rises above silica terraces on the edge of the Waikato River. We can view boiling pools, geysers, and an extremely rare geothermal cave set amongst the native bush of the area. We then move on to Rotorua, where you will stay at a three- or four-star hotel.
This evening, enjoy a magical Maori experience in a truly stunning venue, followed by a succulent hangi feast cooked to perfection in a traditional stone pit.
Stay: 3 or 4-star Hotel in Rotorua
Day 2
Rotorua – Hobbiton – Auckland
Your full-day tour begins with a morning sightseeing tour around three of Rotorua’s iconic visitor attractions. First, visit the cultural centre at Te Puia and gain an insight into Maori traditions and ways of life before entering a geothermal wonderland of impressive geysers and boiling mud pools. Next, see New Zealand’s agricultural industry in action with a sheep-shearing display and sheep-dog trials at the Agrodome.
Following the show, enjoy a scenic drive across the Kaimai Ranges to the picturesque 1,250-acre farm near Matamata, where scenes from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies were filmed.
Take a guided tour and learn how this working farm was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth. Your guide will show you Hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the Mill and many other structures from the movies.
Your experienced and knowledgeable tour guide will escort you through the ten-acre site where the movie set used to be. Your guide will explain what was needed to create the Hobbit set and tell stories about what went on during filming. They will also happily answer any questions you might have. After filming, the Hobbiton movie set was returned to its natural state. However, hobbit holes and some structures from the film set are still in place. After your Hobbiton Movie Set tour, continue your journey to Auckland
